Hanuman Chalisa

हनुमान चालीसा

The complete 40-verse hymn by Goswami Tulsidas Ji — in Hindi (Awadhi) with English transliteration, meaning of the dohas, spiritual significance, benefits of chanting, and FAQs.

Introduction

The Hanuman Chalisa is a forty-verse devotional hymn in praise of Hanuman Ji — the greatest devotee of Bhagwan Ram, the son of Anjani and Pavan Dev, and the personification of strength, wisdom and unwavering bhakti. Composed by Sant Tulsidas Ji in the 16th century, it is one of the most widely recited hymns of Sanatan Dharma, chanted daily in homes and temples across the world.

History

Goswami Tulsidas Ji, the great sant and author of the Ramcharitmanas, composed the Hanuman Chalisa in the Awadhi language during the reign of Emperor Akbar. Tradition holds that Tulsidas Ji composed it while imprisoned in Delhi — chanting it forty times a day until Hanuman Ji himself intervened, and the emperor released the saint in awe.

Spiritual Significance

The Chalisa is a distilled portrait of Hanuman Ji — his form, his deeds in the Ramayana, and his role as the eternal servant of Ram. Each verse invokes a different quality of Bajrang Bali: his strength (bal), his knowledge (gyan), his devotion (bhakti) and his fearlessness. To chant the Chalisa is to invite these very qualities into one's own heart.

Benefits of Chanting

  • Removes fear, anxiety and negative influences from life.
  • Brings courage, mental strength and steady resolve.
  • Deepens devotion to Bhagwan Ram and Sita Mata.
  • Clears obstacles in work, studies and relationships.
  • Calms the mind and improves focus and concentration.
  • Traditionally believed to protect from ill effects of Shani.

How to Chant

Bathe and sit facing east or north before an image of Hanuman Ji. Light a lamp with sesame oil, offer flowers or sindoor if available, and begin with the two opening dohas. Chant each chaupai clearly and unhurriedly, finishing with the closing doha. Tuesdays and Saturdays, and the Brahma Muhurta (roughly 4–5 AM), are considered especially auspicious.

Opening Doha ·

Cleansing the mirror of my mind with the dust of Guru's lotus feet, I sing the pure fame of Raghubar, the giver of the four fruits of life. Knowing myself lacking in wisdom, I remember the Son of the Wind — grant me strength, intellect and knowledge; remove my afflictions and impurities.

Closing Doha · दोहा

पवनतनय संकट हरन, मंगल मूरति रूप। राम लखन सीता सहित, हृदय बसहु सुर भूप॥

O Son of the Wind, remover of afflictions, embodiment of auspiciousness — along with Ram, Lakshman and Sita, reside eternally in my heart, O Lord of the gods.

Meaning of the Opening Dohas

The opening dohas set the intent of the Chalisa. Tulsidas Ji first bows to his Guru, cleansing the mirror of his mind with the dust of the Guru's lotus feet — because only a purified mind can truly glorify the divine. He then acknowledges his own limitations and asks Pavan Kumar (Hanuman Ji) to grant him strength, intellect and knowledge, and to remove all afflictions and impurities. This humility is the doorway to all the verses that follow.
